Reflection for the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Lavishness of Our Prodigal God

Dear Fatima Shrine Family,

This week, as we celebrate the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are invited to reflect deeply on the infinite generosity of our Creator.

In a beautiful reflection shared by Fr. Ron Rolheiser, we look closely at the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23). Unlike a human farmer who carefully calculates where to plant for the best return on investment, God scatters His seed everywhere—on the road, among rocks, among thorns, on bad soil, and on rich soil alike.

God is the absolute antithesis of everything stingy, frugal, or calculating. Instead, He is prodigal—over-lavish, over-extravagant, and endlessly patient.

The Challenge & The Consolation This reality brings both a huge challenge and an immense consolation to our daily lives:

  • The Challenge: To continuously strive to respond to the countless invitations God scatters on our paths, minute by minute.
  • The Consolation: To know that no matter how many of God’s invitations we have ignored in the past, He never runs out of grace. There will always be an infinite number of invitations waiting for us.
